Big Names Show up and Take Gold at New York Spring and Floripa Fall Open
This past weekend, the IBJJF had two packed events with sold out registration in New York and Florianopolis. Both events had some top names in the sport compete and take home the gold. Some epic submissions, flawless performances and redemptions in the Open-Class made for a very entertaining weekend.
The New York Spring Open highlight wins:
JT Torres submits Abmar Barbosa in the middle division final via arm-bar. Torres looked great in this match as he controlled the pace, avoided submission attempts from Barbosa and finished with a slick switch arm-bar from knee on belly.
After taking third in his division, Victor Silverio redeems himself by taking first in the Open-Class. Silverio had a war in the final against the always tough Horlando Monteiro, winning on points.
Although Gianni Grippo did not participate in the Gi division, he makes up for it in the no gi division by winning in the light division and Open-Class.
Floripa Fall Open Highlight wins:
Erberth Santos once again steals the show and takes home 4 gold medals at the Floripa Fall Open.
Yet another flawless performance by Santos as he wins decisively against all opponents in the Gi and No Gi divisions. Santos secures his #1 spot of the IBJJF rankings with 1,345 points. Leandro Lo sits in a close second with 1,186.5 points. There are still many tournaments to gather rank points for both competitors, so the $15,000 end of season cash prize is still up for grabs.
Talita Nogueira takes double gold in the stacked female division, closing out with teammate Luiza Monteiro.
