Manaus International Open Results: Mica Wins Three Golds in Dominant Hometown Performance
For the third straight weekend, Mica Galvao dominated the competition in Brazil.

In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the IBJJF/CBJJ hosted the 2023 Manaus International Open. A decade after the inaugural Manaus Open in 2013, this year's tournament showcased high level gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu at the Arena Poliesportiva Amadeu Teixeira on Saturday August 19th.
At the forefront of the event was Mica Galvao, as the Manaus Open was the third event Mica competed in in as many weekends. In the medium-heavyweight gi division, Galvao's prowess was on full display as he seamlessly combined precision takedowns with a submission-oriented game. In his only gi match, Mica hit several beautifully executed takedowns on his way to a bow n’ arrow finish from the back. Switching to the no-gi medium-heavyweight division, Galvao maintained his dominance. In another resounding victory, he employed his strategic expertise to secure a rear naked choke, underscoring his ability to excel across both styles.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Mica's performance in Manaus was his desire to challenge himself in the no-gi open class division. Galvao's journey through the no-gi open class division was the perfect ending to his third straight weekend of competition. In his initial match, he swiftly transitioned from one position to another, ultimately locking in an armlock from the mount and forcing his opponent to submit. The final match of the division saw Galvao once again showcase his versatility, this time securing a decisive choke from the mount. With this final victory, Mica concluded his remarkable weekend with a perfect record, tallying a staggering 13-0 with thirteen submissions.
Mica’s teammate, Guilherme Fernandes also put on an exceptional display of skill and determination. His day started in the medium-heavy division, where he won his only match. His journey at the Manaus Open didn't end with the medium-heavy division, as he continued to dominate in the open class category. After three great victories, Guilherme posted an impressive 4-0 record for the weekend. The achievement marked his second gold medal of 2023, following his earlier victory at the Rio Fall Open.
