The third major gi championship of the year, the 2023 Brasileiros, was an absolutely massive event. Taking place over nine days with over 8,000 competitors, the Brasileiros were one of the most anticipated and exciting tournaments of 2023. Just as we did with the Europeans and Pans, we took a deep dive into the black belt adult quarterfinal through final matches to learn more about the submissions at the event. Read on to find out which athletes had the most submissions, which submissions occurred the most frequently, how the figures from Brasileiros compared to those of Europeans and Pans, and much more.

Standout Submission Artists Of The 2023 Brasileiros

There were eight competitors who had over a 50% submission rate at the 2023 Brasileiros. Victor Hugo got the most finishes, submitting six of his opponents between the ultra-heavy and open class divisions. Gabrieli Pessanha came in second with five submissions. She finished all four of her open class matches by submission. Atos athletes Lucas Pinheiro and Gustavo Bastista both had a 100% submission rate, as both of them submitted their three opponents with chokes from the back.

Lucas Pinheiro - Rooster Weight Champion, 3 submissions, 100% submission rate

Gustavo Batista - Medium-Heavy Champion, 3 submissions, 100% submission rate

Victor Hugo - Ultra-Heavy & Open Class Champion, 6 submissions, 85.71% submission rate

Gabrieli Pessanha - Super Heavy & Open Class Champion, 5 submissions, 71.43% submission rate

Lucas Valente - Lightweight Champion, 3 submissions, 75% submission rate

Tainan Dalpra - Middleweight Champion, 2 submissions, 66.67% submission rate

Bianca Basilio - Featherweight Champion, 2 submissions, 66.67% submission rate

Tamiris Fernanda - Heavyweight Champion, 2 submissions, 66.67% submission rate

Quarters - Finals Submission rate of 39.20%

Black belt adult competitors registered a 39.20% submission rate from the quarterfinals through the finals at the 2023 Brasileiros. Of the nineteen finals, seven ended with submissions. Victor Hugo had two final match submissions, one in the ultra-heavy final and another in the open class final. The Brasileiros overall submission percentage fell right between the Europeans (43.40%) and the Pans (37.29%). The divisions with the most submissions were the male medium-heavy and open class categories, with both having seven matches and five submissions.

Most Effective Submissions

Through our analyses of the Europeans, Pans, and Brasileiros, we learned that the most effective submission has been the choke from the back. These submissions reigned supreme once again at the Brasileiros as seventeen of the forty nine total submissions (34.69%) came from the back. Also similar to the Europeans and Pans, the armbar was the second most utilized finish, making up nine of the forty nine submissions (18.37%). The next two most popular submissions from the Brasileiros were the ezekiel choke and the straight ankle lock, where five of each were used in the quarterfinals through the finals.

Conclusion

So far in 2023, we’ve seen 139 submissions in 349 matches from the quarterfinals through the finals in black belt adult major championship matches. The Brasileiros had both the most matches (125) and submissions (49) in these events, including submissions in both open class finals. Stay tuned for the 2023 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships submission report, as well as a comprehensive breakdown of the findings from all of the 2023 major gi championships.
