2023 World Champion Jansen Gomes Aims for Second World Title of 2023
Middleweight World Champion Jansen Gomes will take on the medium-heavyweight division at the Worlds No-Gi in Las Vegas.
Following the biggest achievement of his career thus far at the World Championships in Long Beach, California in June, Jansen Gomes makes his long-awaited return to the competitive stage. He’ll compete in the talent rich medium-heavyweight division at the IBJJF Worlds No-Gi in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jansen’s absence from major tournaments since the gi Worlds in June has left fans eagerly anticipating his resurgence, especially given his historic win in the final against Tainan Dalpra, the two-time middleweight Champion.
In an exclusive interview, Jansen shared his excitement about returning to a major event. "It feels great to be back in another big tournament such as the Worlds No-Gi and feel this adrenaline again. I’m excited to be back!" For Jansen, adapting to no-gi from the gi has been a seamless transition, as he maintains his core positions while making subtle adjustments. "I don’t think my game changes that much since I try to do the same things I do in gi just with a few different adjustments and always trying to push the pace. I like to do some takedowns, throws, passes, and finish on the back," he elaborates, shedding light on his versatile skill set that can be tailored for both environments.
The medium-heavy division, where Jansen competes, is absolutely stacked at the Worlds No-Gi. Sebastian Rodriguez, Ronaldo Junior, Gabriel Arges, and many other highly accomplished athletes will all be aiming for the medium-heavyweight title. Speaking of potential match-ups, Jansen shared his thoughts on the division. “The medium-heavy division is always stacked with a lot of talented athletes and is one of the toughest divisions. I’m sure with any of them it would be a great match and a war for sure! I fought against Sebastian a lot in the colored belts in the gi and no-gi but never at black belt, so I’m sure it will be a great matchup if that happens. I fought Ronaldo too but never no-gi. I think a match against him will always be a war. It doesn't matter if it is gi or no-gi! I never fought Arges. I’m sure it is another great match as well. He's been in the game for quite a while. He’s a World Champion and has a lot of experience in the game so I’m sure that will be a tough fight!”
Jansen went on to share more about his recent training focus, emphasizing sharpening various aspects of his game.
As the 2023 Worlds No-Gi draws near, Jansen took the opportunity to assure fans that they’ll witness the quintessential style and determination that he embodies on the mats. "You guys can expect the same Jansen as always, pushing the pace, looking for the submissions, and ready to face anyone that’s in there! I’m ready for the war and to play anywhere," he declared confidently, setting the stage for his highly anticipated return to competition.
