Andre Galvao Teaches Kaynan The Cross Choke From Mount
Kaynan Duarte put on the best performance of his career at the 2023 Europeans in Paris, France. The 2X World Champion from Atos Jiu-Jitsu competed at super heavy and in the open class, submitting all seven of his opponents throughout the event. Kaynan’s finishes came via armbar, choke from the back, and mounted cross choke. He used a series of highly refined fundamental techniques to capture his first black belt open class title at a major championship, a strategy his Professor Andre Galvao preaches to all of his students.
“Atos is a BJJ academy that focuses on the basics and fundamentals. From white to black belts, competitors or non competitors, children, and adults, everyone learns the basics first. The basics work, especially the top basic positions. At the end of the day the submissions from mount, side mount, and the back are always basic.”
In his first match of the 2023 Europeans open class division, Kaynan squared off with Luis Cantareira of Fratres Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kaynan swept, passed the guard, mounted, and finished with a cross choke from the mount, a submission Professor Galvao has spent countless years developing.
“I developed this submission as a blue belt and I hit it so many times against black belts. Now I’m passing it on to my top black belt competitors like Kaynan. The way Kaynan absorbs knowledge is incredible. He’s amazing and he had a flawless campaign at Europeans without having a single point scored against him and submitting his opponents in different ways from different positions.
