For the second time in 2023, the IBJJF returned to Austin, Texas for a huge weekend of jiu-jitsu. The Austin Summer Open, the Austin Summer No-Gi Open, and the Austin Kids Open all went down on Saturday July 15th and Sunday July 16th amid a packed Round Rock Sports Center facility.

In the black belt divisions, team Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu won six gold medals in the gi and one without the gi. Two athletes, Felipe Costa and Yan Paiva, won two golds a piece. Felipe won the super heavy and open class gi divisions while Yan won the middleweight division in the gi and the super heavy no-gi division the following day. Felipe spoke about his weekend and his upcoming competition plans.

“It was an amazing event. I had so much fun at the 2023 Austin Summer Open. I was excited to see my Six Blades teammates compete in front of a home town crowd. Everyone fought hard and competed at the highest level. I felt the energy from my friends and family and was ready to put on a show today. I had four fights. I closed two with submissions and two by points! I am thankful for the support of my teammates and proud to bring home double gold to Six Blades HQ. I’ll be fighting again soon at Jiu-Jitsu CON!”

Brasileiro Champion Yan “Pica Pau” Paiva won three fights at on Saturday in the gi and one fight on Sunday in no-gi. He had an overall record of 4-1 on the weekend, earning gold medals in his weight class and a bronze in the gi absolute. Other Six Blades gold medalists included Augusto Rabelo (feather), Gabriel Amorim (light), and Carlos Neto (medium-heavy).
