Erich Munis On His Return to Competition And His Focus For 2023

Dream Art’s Erich Munis is a 2X IBJJF World Champion. He won his first title in 2021 in his black belt debut at the event, defeating world-class competitors such as Felipe Pena and Fellipe Andrew. Munis would return to the Worlds in 2022, winning his second title at super heavy and solidifying his spot as the top super heavyweight competitor in the world. He returned to IBJJF competition this past weekend at the Curitiba Open for the first time since last year’s Worlds, where he won three matches to take gold. We caught up with Erich to discuss his return to competition and the 2023 Pans.
How did it feel to be back in IBJJF competition?
"It was really cool. The last time I competed in Curitiba was in the colored belts. Being here again and seeing the affection from the crowd was very good.”
What have you been working on in training and what new techniques are you hoping to display this year?
“The reason I fought in Curitiba was exactly that, to test the new positions I’ve been working on and adjust some things.”
Can you describe your matches in Curitiba?
“I managed to do what I was working on at the gym, which was taking down my opponents and improving my guard passing. I felt that this was lacking in my game.”
What are your expectations for Pans, your first major IBJJF tournament since the 2022 Worlds?
“For the Pans I intend to finish adjusting my game and fight in the areas where I need to improve. I’m very confident and god willing we’ll take the double gold.”
Kaynan Duarte recently moved up to super heavy and put on a tremendous performance at the Europeans. What did you think of Kaynan’s matches at Europeans and are you looking forward to a potential match with him. How do you think it would go?
“Kaynan always puts on a good performance. I think he is a very respectful athlete. I’m training well and I’m excited for big challenges. It’s definitely going to be a great fight.”
What are your goals in IBJJF competition for 2023?
“Right now for IBJJF competition I’m focused on the Pans and Worlds, and maybe the Brazilian Nationals. After the Worlds I want to put more focus on no-gi and look for different challenges.”
