Five Questions With Johnatha Alves Ahead of Open Weight Super Fight

You competed in a super fight against a great opponent in Mathias Luna at the IBJJF FloGrappling GP and won a decision. How did you feel about the match?

“It wasn’t the way I wanted the fight to play out because I know my potential and believed I could give more than I did. I’m coming to this match with a different mindset.”

Now, you’ll be taking on Roosevelt Sousa, who weighed in at the last GP at 264 pounds. What motivated you to take this match?

“The challenge motivates me to take this match. I believe in good technique over anything else. Roosevelt is a very skilled and dangerous opponent and I have a high chance of winning this match.”

What are you thoughts on Roosevelt’s jiu-jitsu?

“He’s stronger and heavier than me, and he’s got a very aggressive game. The fact that he is bigger means he won’t be as fast as a lightweight."

How do you approach a match or a sparring session with someone with a significant weight advantage over you?

“I try to execute my primary game no matter what. As I’ve mentioned, a heavier opponent has an advantage over a lighter person with weight, strength, and pressure. On the contrary, a lighter opponent has an advantage over a heavier person with speed and sharp technique.”

How do you see this match against Roosevelt playing out?

“I believe I will be able to pick up a good pace where it will be difficult for him to keep up."
