The IBJJF Kansas City Open, now in its fourth edition, witnessed an impressive showcase of jiu-jitsu talent on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, at the Hy Vee Arena. This year's competition brought together seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, resulting in highly technical matches and epic moments.
One name that shone brightly throughout the event was Horlando Monteiro, A Kimura BJJ athlete who was promoted to black belt in 2016. Horlando put on an extraordinary performance, earning gold in both the heavyweight division and the open class. He started his day with two impressive wins in the heavyweight division. He then entered the open class as the #1 seed. In the open class, he faced stiff competition from experienced opponents and rising stars in the black belt division. Horlando won three more matches, bringing his total to five wins for the day. After his remarkable achievements at the 2023 Kansas City Open, Horlando Monteiro took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the event.
Another standout athlete at the 2023 Kansas City Open was CheckMat’s Mayara Custodio. Her impressive weekend included victories in her weight class and the open class, demonstrating her versatility in both gi and no-gi matches. Mayara put together a 4-0 record over the weekend.
Rafael Silveira, a rookie black belt hailing from Atos, also showcased exceptional skill in Kansas City. Silveira, regarded as one of the most promising new black belts in the sport, won the 2023 World Championships as a brown belt and was promoted to black belt shortly after.
He described his experience, saying, "The Kansas City Open went well. I scored a quick guard pass, my opponent turtled, and I pulled guard and caught him. The black belt level is great, and I was feeling a little bit of pressure in the previous tournaments just because it's the highest level of the sport. I'm looking forward to performing more often so I can be more used to the environment and reach the ultimate goal."
