Karen Antunes 2023 Worlds Q&A

The last time you competed at the Worlds was in 2018 as a featherweight, where you won gold. What’s motivating you to return to the Worlds in 2023?

“In 2018 I had an 8 month old baby and I felt like I still needed jiu-jitsu. I felt like I was as hungry as I was before having a child. At the time I had no idea I could win. I think I’m still the only black belt that ever won Worlds after becoming a mother. My motivation was to show to other women that it is possible. It’s hard but it is possible if you really want it. Now I don’t feel like I need to show or motivate anybody. I just want it because I love it. I love the process of getting ready. Even if I’m sleepless and tired, I wouldn’t trade it for a less crazy or easy life.”

Athletes like Bianca Basilio and Anna Rodrigues have ben having a lot of success at featherweight recently. Have you had a chance to watch them or any other top featherweights and what do you think about their jiu-jitsu?

“Sure, I have been watching Bia and Ana the entire time. They are the type of jiu-jitsu black belts worth watching. Both are complete and exciting and I’m excited to have this level of girls to compete against. I fought Bia at Pans in 2018 but I haven’t fought Ana yet. The bigger the challenge the bigger my motivation to wake up every morning hungry to win.”

Having been a black belt for about 8 years now, how have you seen jiu-jitsu technique and strategy evolve overtime?

“I see more professionalism in the sport. We have more tools and information. The media now is much better so we can watch our opponents over and over or learn from other people through the internet, which in my vision helps evolve the techniques and strategy as well.”

What are some of the things you’ve been working on with your jiu-jitsu since the last time you competed?

“I’ve been doing a lot of work. Trying to get my body where it needs to be is way more challenging now than it was five years ago. I’m working on getting my strength and speed back, tons of speed drills, and sparring to get the timing of positions. I’m doing everything I can to give a hard time to the girls.”

Do you have any final thoughts on the 2023 Worlds you want to share?

“I just can’t wait to come back and feel that energy that I've never felt in any other place. Being able to step on those mats is a great victory already. Winning is the cherry on top of the cake!”

The IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championships start on Thursday June 1st and run through Sunday June 4th. Be sure to catch all of the action live, exclusively on flograppling.com.
