The International Master South America took place in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday July 22nd and Sunday July 23rd. This event was one of the most prestigious jiu-jitsu competitions for athletes over thirty years of age in Brazil and showcased the discipline and dedication that comes with years of experience on the mats.

Among the many talented competitors in Rio was Marlon Barbosa of team Bon Sai JJ. Marlon stood out as a true force to be reckoned with, dominating the super heavyweight and open class divisions, ultimately securing the coveted title of Master 1 Double Gold Champion. Marlon had this to say about his amazing performance.

“I'm very happy with my performance. It was a high-level championship and I managed to achieve my goal with two gold medals. I fought with great athletes and champions with important titles. My jiu-jitsu is aggressive and when they don't slow me down I can perform well. It was a great month of July. I also won the absolute at Betim Open and BJJ Pro São Paulo.”

Another champion at the event was Meiry Pires of Carlson Gracie Team. Meiry competed in the Master 2 open class division, where she won two tough fights. She spoke about her campaign at the prestigious masters tournament.

“The Master International Championship is one of my favorite jiu-jitsu events. I fought hard. The first absolute fight was with a very strong champion athlete and I won by the judge’s decision. The final was a calmer pace. I managed to play better and got the win in the final. My goal is to compete at the 2024 IBJJF Worlds.”

The International Master South America Tournament in Rio De Janeiro has once again demonstrated that jiu-jitsu is not only a sport but also a way of life. The athletes served as an inspiration to all jiu-jitsu enthusiasts worldwide, encouraging them to live the jiu-jitsu lifestyle and reap the benefits of the sport throughout their entire lives.
