The 2023 Miami International Open took place at the Fuchs Pavilion at the Miami-Dade County Youth Fairgrounds. Gracie Barra and Fight Sports were the top teams of the event that also featured several phenomenal individual performances.
Brianna Ste-Marie won double gold in her black belt gi debut. Brianna had one match at middleweight, pulling guard, taking the back from de la riva, and finishing with a collar choke. In the open class Brianna had two more matches. She went up 9-0 in her semifinal and then finished a head and arm choke from the mount. In the final she went up 15-0 on points before finishing another head and arm choke submission. Be on the lookout as Brianna will compete at the 2023 Brasileiros this coming weekend in the lightweight division.
One of Brianna’s main coaches and inspirations for her game, Leonardo Saggioro, returned to IBJJF competition at the Miami Open for the first time since the 2021 Brasileiro. Leonardo had two matches in the lightweight division. In his first match, he passed his opponent’s guard to the mount and finished a collar choke as his opponent recovered to half guard. His second match was a 2-0 points victory, as Leonardo scored with a sweep from a single leg, holding onto the two point lead until time expired.
CheckMat’s Mathias Luna won gold at medium-heavy. He won his first match by armbar and his final on points, 6-4, over Unity Jiu-Jitsu’s Felipe Cesar Silva. Roosevelt Sousa was the male open class champion. He had three fights in the open class. He finished a cross collar choke from the mount in the quarterfinal and won the semifinal and final matches via points.
Roberto Jimenez took double gold without the gi. He put on a stellar performance, submitting Roosevelt Sousa in the semifinal and JZ Cavalcante in the final.
