Phoenix International Open Results: Fellipe Andrew Wins Gi and No-Gi Gold in Arizona

The Westworld of Scottsdale held the 2022 Phoenix International Open with gi, no-gi, and kids divisions. Fellipe Andre, Marcio Andre, Mateus Rodrigues, Sergio Rios, Osvaldo Moizinho, and Danilo Moreira all competed in the Grand Canyon State among many other talented black belts. The following were the standout competitors of the event.
Alliance Jiu-Jitsu’s Fellipe Andrew will compete in a super fight at the IBJJF FloGrappling GP against Erberth Santos on Friday August 12th. In his last tournament before the super fight, Fellipe competed at the Phoenix Open in the super heavy division. In the two matches in his weight division, Fellipe had two submissions. The first was a straight ankle lock and the second was a kata gatame from the mount. In the open class, Fellipe had three more matches. He submitted his opponent in the final with an armlock from the mount. Fellipe would return on Sunday to compete without the gi. He won super heavy gold with two fights and two submissions.
Marcio Andre of Nova Uniao had two fights in the middleweight division. In his first match, Marcio pulled guard and quickly swept his opponent. A knee cut pass that Marcio used to get to the mount put him up on the scoreboard by a significant margin. He locked up a mounted triangle and rolled to his back to finish with an armbar. In the middleweight final, Marcio faced Daniel Aquino of CheckMat. He spent most of the match on top, pressuring Daniel’s guard until passing with a knee cut. As Daniel turned into him, Marcio locked in a tight seatbelt control, took the back, and finished with a bow n’ arrow choke.
At medium-heavy it was Sergio Rios who came home with gold. In Sergio’s final, he defended a single leg from his opponent and attacked a loop choke. As his opponent turned to defend the choke he transitioned to a choke from the back. Sergio also competed in the open class where he placed third.
In the female gi open class, Luciana Mota of Alliance San Diego went home with gold. She had two matches. In her final, she submitted Sara Apodaca with a kneebar. In no-gi, Emilio Hernandez put on an excellent performance, winning featherweight gold and getting silver in the open. The male no-gi open class winner was Joshua Bacallao of Gracie Barra. Joshua also won gold in the middleweight division earlier in the day.
