San Diego Summer International Open Results: Alliance World Champions Fellipe Andrew & Melissa Striker Win Absolute Gold
Alliance, Atos, & Gracie Barra were among teams who brought world-class black belts to San Diego.
A pair of 2X World Champions won open class gold at the Harry West Gymnasium for the San Diego Summer Open. Fellipe Andrew and Melissa Stricker of Alliance both won their second World titles this year and have not slowed down since. Fellipe won open class gold in San Diego after defeating two tough opponents in Mathias Luna and Caio Vinicius. Be sure to catch Fellipe competing at the IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix on Friday September 1st. Melissa also had two fights to win open class gold, defeating 2021 World Champion Gabi McComb in the final.
Lightweight GP Champion Janaina Lebre went up in weight in San Diego, winning first place in the middleweight division. She won two fights on the day, adding another medal to her 2023 collection. Janaina’s next challenge will be at the IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix, where she’ll take on LEAD BJJ’s Emily Fernandez in a lightweight super fight.
Atos Jiu-Jitsu aces Andy Murasaki and Pedro Machado returned to competition in San Diego, winning the medium-heavy and heavyweight divisions, respectively. Andy had two fights, getting the submission in the first match and defeating the highly talented Mathias Luna of CheckMat in the final by points. Pedro won three fights, finishing the final with his signature armbar after a beautiful sweep. It was Pedro’s second IBJJF gold medal in 2023.
2021 Pan Champion Lavinia Barbosa was the only adult black belt in San Diego to win gold in both gi and no-gi. She competed in the light-featherweight divisions and won two matches in the gi on Saturday and two more on Sunday without the gi to go 4-0 on the weekend.
The no-gi open class champions were CheckMat athletes Elder Cruz and Thamires Monteiro.
