For the 12th time in the organization’s history, the IBJJF hosted the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Japan. The event took place at the Aichi-ken Budokan in Nagoya, Japan’s 4th largest city. The standout team at the event was Art of Jiu Jitsu, led by Professor Guilherme Mendes. They brought many of their top black belts, who took home five gold medals in their divisions.

2X black belt World Champion Tainan Dalpra returned to action in Japan, this time in the medium-heavyweight division. Tainan had two fights, winning both by submission while displaying his creativity as an athlete.

The AOJ female black belts won four gold medals, going 6-0 on the day. New black belt Shelby Murphey and lightweight Margot Ciccarelli both won one match in their divisions to take gold. 4X World Champion Mayssa Bastos competed at light-feather, where she won both of her matches via submission.

Mayssa and Margot also competed in the open class. Both athletes won their semifinal matches, with Margot taking first in the division. The four gold medals won by the AOJ females earned them the adult female team title for the event.

The event also marked a big promotion for team AOJ. Cole Abate was promoted to black belt after winning his three fights in the brown belt lightweight division, all via submission. Cole spent a short amount of time at brown belt, but won Pan and World titles at the rank.

Koji Shibamoto and Marcos Souza also competed in Japan, winning the rooster weight and super heavyweight divisions, respectively.  Igor Silva was the male double gold champion of the event. He won two matches at ultra heavy and two more in the open class.
