2023 Brasileiro Recap: Hugo, Gabrieli, & Tainan Put On A Show In Sao Paulo
Jiu- Jitsu fans in Sao Paulo, Brazil brought the energy to the 2023 Brasileiros. The nine day event had over 8,000 competitors, record breaking numbers for the major championship. Throughout the course of the event the crowd motivated the competitors with their cheering and applause, creating many amazing moments all week long.
Tainan Dalpra Wins 3rd Major of 2023 In Front Of Hometown Crowd
Coming into the 2023 Brasileiros, Tainan Dalpra had amassed an astonishing 54-0 record in IBJJF competition as a black belt and won two World titles and three European and Pan titles. The Brasileiro title, however, was one that was missing from his black belt collection. He put on another performance for the ages in Sao Paulo, winning three matches to take middleweight gold. In one of the best moments of the event, Tainan submitted his semifinal opponent with an armbar after hitting a gator roll, a technique he first displayed in the final of the 2023 Europeans. The Brasileiros gold medal now puts him in position to potentially win his fourth major event of the year at the 2023 World Championships in Long Beach, California and improved his IBJJF record to 57-0.
Gabrieli & Victor Hugo Win Double Gold
Gabrieli Pessanha is simply unstoppable. Starting with the 2021 World Championships, Gabrieli has now won eight straight double golds at a major tournament, a feat that has never been matched in jiu-jitsu. She has not only been winning her matches, but she’s doing so in dominant fashion. At the Brasileiros, Gabrieli had seven matches with five submissions. In 2023 she’s now had sixteen matches at the major tournaments and found the finish in twelve of them for a 75% submission rate.
The other adult black belt double gold medalist from the Brasileiros was Victor Hugo of Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu. It was Victor’s first major championship of 2023. The 2X World Champion hadn’t competed at the Brasileiros since winning double gold at the event back in 2019 as a brown belt. There were several interesting challenges for Victor going into the event, including matches with Victor Honorio, a European and Brasileiro Champion who returned to his first major championship since the 2019 Worlds. Victor beat Honorio twice, once in the semifinal of the ultra-heavy division via points and again in the open class final via choke from the back.
Atos Takes Home Four Black Belt Gold Medals
The Atos Jiu-Jitsu team, based out of San Diego, California, is home to many of the top athletes in jiu-jitsu. The team started off the Brasileiros by winning the juvenile team title and continued to produce champions throughout the rest of the event. In the black belt divisions, four Atos competitors took home gold.
Lucas Pinheiro put on what was arguably the best performance of his career at the Brasileiros. He dropped down to rooster weight for the first time since the 2020 Pans, where he won his first black belt major championship in the gi. Lucas submitted all three of his opponents to win gold, using back chokes variations in each of them. His best match of the day was his semifinal against 2022 Pan Champion Bebeto Oliveira. As Lucas was attempting to pass the guard, Bebeto caught him in a triangle that was fully locked in. Lucas appeared to be in a lot of danger, but he managed to escape and quickly turned the tables, getting to Bebeto’s back and finishing him with a choke.
Luiza Monteiro has been on fire in 2023. As one of the top black belts in the world for well over a decade, Luiza has been no stranger to winning major championship gold medals. In January she won her second European title and then won her 9th Pan title in March. This past weekend she won her seventh Brasileiro title, defeating three tough opponents to win gold. The lightweight division at the World Championships, where Luiza will compete next, will be stacked, as Nathalie Ribeiro, Janaina Lebre, Ffion Davies, Julia Alves, and Brianna Ste-Marie are all expected to compete.
In the featherweight division, Bianca Basilio won her fifth Brazilian National title. She continued to live up to her reputation as a submission hunter, getting the tap in two of her three matches. In her first fight she won via straight foot lock and then advanced to the final after submitting her opponent with a choke from the back. Bianca will return to the World Championships in June aiming for her second straight title.
Like his teammate Lucas Pinheiro, Gustavo Batista won all three of his Brasileiros matches with chokes from the back. Gustavo’s first major championship gold of 2023 came at the Pans, where he showcased the pressure based guard passing that made him a World Champion. At Brasileiros he implemented many different tools in his game that he used to perfection. In the medium-heavy final Gustavo defeated 2022 Brasileiro Champion Matheus Spirandelli of Alliance, scoring six points before getting the submission.
Four Athletes Win Their Third Major In 2023
Coming into the Brasileiros there were five athletes who were vying for their third major championship title of 2023, four of whom were able to leave the event with another gold medal. Tainan Dalpra, Mayssa Bastos, Luiza Monteiro, and Gabrieli Pessanha have all won European, Pan, and Brasileiro gold. All of these athletes are expected to compete at the 2023 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships, where black belts will compete on Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June 4th.
