The Arena Centro Multiuso de São José hosted the 2023 Sul Brasileiro De Jiu-Jitsu that featured both gi and no-gi divisions. CheckMat, Alliance, GF Team, and Gracie Barra were the top teams of the event, bringing some of their best competitors based in Brazil to the tournament.
GF Team’s Patrick Gaudio made his return to competition at the Sul Brasileiro De Jiu-Jitsu. The European, Pan, and Brazilian National Champion hadn’t competed in the gi since the 2022 World Championships. Gaudio won gold on Saturday in the gi and on Sunday without the kimono, putting together a combined record of 4-0 and hitting multiple submissions along the way.
The double gold champion in the gi was Dream Art’s Rafael Paganini. He won three matches at medium-heavy and four more in the open class. “I had six matches and won five by submission with four guillotines and one bow and arrow choke. I displayed a lot of the new things that I’ve been adding to my game lately. My focus is now on the grand slam events, the Pan Ams, Brazilian Nationals, and Worlds. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead this year.”
Lucas Tres of Atos Jiu-Jitsu won middleweight gold, winning four matches to become the champion. On his road to gold Lucas submitted all four of his opponents.
The female open class champion in the gi was Thais Souza dos Santos of GF Team. Thais won two matches to take home the gold medal. The no-gi open class champions were Darlan Casaca and Mikaela Barros De Lima. Darlan came back to the open class after losing in the final of the medium heavy division to Servio Tulio of Gracie Barra. He won three matches without the gi to take home gold while Mikaela won two.
