Breaking Down Victor Hugo’s Epic Double Gold Brasileiros Performance
The Six Blades competitor submitted 6 of 7 opponents en route to his first black belt major championship double gold.
Victor Hugo returned to the Brasileiros for the 2023 edition for the first time since 2019, a year in which he won double gold as a brown belt. He described his 2019 Brasileiros experience as one of his all time favorite moments from all his years of competing. His return was even more epic, as Victor won gold in the ultra-heavy and open class divisions. And he did so in completely dominant fashion, submitting six of his seven opponents without conceding a single point or advantage.

Ultra-Heavy Champion - 3 Matches, 2 Submissions
Victor took gold in the 2023 Brasileiros ultra-heavy division after winning three matches. He finished two of his matches with rear naked chokes, one in the quarterfinal and another in the final. As the reigning ultra-heavy World Champion, Victor was the #1 seed in the division. His ultra-heavy titles include two World Championship golds, a Worlds No-Gi gold, and Pan gi and no-gi golds.
Open Class Champion - 4 Matches, 4 Submissions
Prior to the 2023 Brasileiros, Victor had yet to win a major championship open class gold in the gi. Victor lost two very close open class quarterfinal matches at the Worlds, one to Nicholas Meregali in 2021 and another to Gustavo Batista in 2022. The Brasileiros was Victor’s first open class gi title and was arguably his most dominant performance as a black belt. He finished all four of his opponents, each with a different submission. He used an ezekiel choke, an americana, a kneebar, and a collar choke from the back as his open class finishes. After three major gi championships in 2023 there have been three different double gold medalists, all of whom put on extremely dominant performances. Could we see a fourth double gold medalist at the Worlds, or will Kaynan Duarte, Nicholas Meregali, or Victor Hugo win yet again?
