New Haven Fall International Open Results: Italo Moura Wins Middleweight and Open Class Gold

The New Haven Fall Open took place on Saturday November 19th and Sunday November 20th at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, Connecticut. Both the gi and no-gi divisions brought out elite competitors who put on excellent matches throughout the weekend.
The big winner in the gi was Italo Moura of Unity Jiu-Jitsu. Italo won two matches in the middleweight division before jumping into the open class. After three more victories in the open, Italo secured his second gold medal of the day. “I had five fights, two in my division three in the open class. I finished two of them with an armbar. I felt good during the fights and I was able to dominate and perform what I’ve been practicing, including some pressure passes, and a back take.”
No-Gi divisions took place on Sunday November 20th. In the featherweight division Gianni Grippo won gold after two fights and two submissions. “It felt good to get my first gold today after coming off a pretty significant injury not too long ago. I cleared my first hurdle just getting back to competition, and now I cleared another hurdle by winning this tournament. I’m excited to keep building from here,” said Gianni.
Other no-gi gold medalists included Junny Ocasio (light feather), Ruan Alvarenga (lightweight), and Felipe Cesar Silva (medium-heavy). The no-gi open class winners were Melissa Stricker of Alliance and Francisco Cuneo of Unity Jiu-Jitsu.
