2022 Pan No-Gi Champion Pedro Rocha is ready to go for his second major no-gi title. This year, Pedro has put together a stellar record, going 8-0 with four of his wins coming by way of his signature guillotine choke. As he prepares for the upcoming Pan No-Gi and sets his sights on the World No-Gi Championship in Las Vegas later this year, it's clear that Pedro Rocha is a name to watch on the competition scene. At last year’s Pan No-Gi, he took on the heavyweight division and put on what was arguably the best performance of his career. Pedro submitted two of his three opponents with the guillotine choke and cemented himself not only as the champion but also as a submission hunter. We caught up with Pedro ahead of the 2023 Pan No-Gi to get his thoughts on his continued success in 2023, the upcoming edition of the Pan No-Gi, and more.

You’re undefeated in 2023 in IBJJF competition. Can you talk about your year so far?

“My year has been very good. I’m very happy with everything that’s been happening, not just because I’m earning more for my family and my gym. My trust comes entirely in God.”

The Guillotine has become your signature submission. What do you feel you do to make this technique so successful?

“I train a lot every day. I’ve been doing the guillotine for many years. I think I’ve been adjusting this position over the years and doing it better each time.”

In 2022 you won the Pan No-Gi at heavyweight. Do you feel like that is your most important title to date?

“The Pan No-Gi is definitely an important title. I think the Pans and Brasileiros are my biggest titles as a black belt.”

What are your expectations for the 2023 Pan No-Gi? What are you hoping to show on the mats?

“I intend to compete in the absolute this year. I want to leave with two gold medals. I want to be the best version of myself every time I fight.”

Do you plan to compete at Worlds No-Gi?

“Probably yes. I will be there looking for this title once again. I have already been runner-up twice. I’m going there to win my first World title.”
