Nico Maglicic | An Australian Star is Born
The Man Behind the World Titles

Nico Maglicic has become one of the most inspiring stories in recent memory. The Sydney, Australia native has developed into one of the top jiu-jitsu athletes in the sport, claiming both No-Gi and Gi World titles in the same calendar year. Despite his elite level and fantastic achievements, Nico was not a child prodigy or generational prospect, he was a hard-nosed and hard-working kid who simply chased a dream.
Nico Maglicic began his jiu-jitsu journey at the age of twelve due to the instruction of his father, a mentor that instilled foundational traits in Nico long before his World Championship pedigree. His progression developed through the passion and determination to constantly improve.
“My dad would watch jiu-jitsu videos, especially the Mendes Brothers, and save them for me to watch on the way to training… their style became a huge influence on my own jiu-jitsu.”
In understanding Nico’s journey to becoming a world-class competitor, his dad’s influence and inspiration becomes clear. His father's lessons of sacrifice, determination, and consistency continue to impact the Australian Champion to this day.
“My biggest role model has always been my dad. More than anything, my dad taught me what it means to believe in someone before they’ve achieved anything. My dad was there for the long drives, late nights, and early days when there was no guarantee any of this would work out.”
As Nico progressed through his teenage years, he caught the competition bug. Nico began competing internationally at sixteen years old, eventually relocating to the United States for full-time training. The journey, however, was anything but straightforward.
“For years I worked full-time while training as much as I could. I started working on building sites as a scaffolding labourer, and eventually the physical workload became too much for my body, so I started working as a bartender. That allowed me to train 2-3 times a day, then I’d work late nights and all weekend. Everything I did was ultimately to support my jiu-jitsu.”
After years of sacrifice and relentless pursuit of a dream, Nico earned his black belt in 2023. The Atos Jiu-Jitsu representative had officially finalized a promising color belt career, with continued aspirations of major titles at the highest level. Nico realized that dream at the 2025 No-Gi World Championships.
“Honestly winning the 2025 No-Gi Worlds was something I never expected. Becoming the first Australian male to win a No-Gi World Championship is still something that feels crazy to say.”
After relishing his first black belt major event triumph, Nico quickly returned to the training room. The Aussie set his sights on etching his name in the history books yet again, only this time in the Gi. The 2026 Gi Grand Slam circuit progressed quickly, and Nico continued to put in the work as the World Championships approached. His performance was everything he had hoped for. Nico displayed the skillset and technique built through years of refinement, but more importantly he showcased the gritty determination that was instilled in him from his youth.
Nico ultimately lost a hard-fought finals match to claim the Worlds silver medal, however, that wasn’t the end of the story. Months later, his opponent’s USADA infraction led to a reversal of decision, elevating Nico to the heavyweight gold medal position. The Australian born athlete had officially become a World Champion.
“Honestly it’s hard to put into words. I was heartbroken, I remember writing about how I was inches away from a dream, how hard it was to wake up and train again after coming so close, and finishing with, ‘I will be World Champion one day’. Now, a few months later, I’m officially the 2026 Heavyweight World Champion.”
Nico, having won both Heavyweight World Championship titles, is finally enjoying the fruits of his labor. His incredible journey highlights the roller coaster of emotions that can plague high-level athletes, yet his 2025-2026 story embodies the elation of momentous achievements.
“The biggest takeaway for me this year is the importance of surrounding yourself with people who genuinely believe in your dreams. This year has shown me that the journey is never going to be perfect, but with the right people around you, a willingness to keep going, and belief in what you’re chasing, you can achieve things you once only dreamed about.”
Beyond the personal achievements and dreams fulfilled, Nico’s story has become meaningful for an entire jiu-jitsu demographic and nation. His background is becoming harder to find at the most elite levels of the sport. Being raised in Australia, continuing education while competing, and supporting himself financially with odd jobs, Nico’s journey represents the blue-collar upbringing that resonates with so many jiu-jitsu enthusiasts.
“I know the sacrifice it takes to compete on the world stage, and I honestly feel blessed to be living the life I am. I’ve worked and grinded for this for so many years, and being able to wake up every day and do what I love most is a dream come true.”
As for the Australian jiu-jitsu scene, they now call home to the reigning Heavyweight Gi and No-Gi World Champion. In roughly six months, Nico became the first Australian male No-Gi World Champion, the first Australian Gi World Champion of all-time, and joins an elite class of athletes who have won consecutive Gi and No-Gi World titles. A truly historic run. His achievements now serve as inspiration for an entire country of prospective athletes who now have tangible evidence that their dreams are possible.
“For me, it’s more about what I can continue to build from here. I want to keep pushing the sport forward in Australia, bring a new generation up, and hopefully show Australian kids that they can dream big and make a career out of jiu-jitsu too.”
Nico Maglicic has written his name in the history books. In the process, he has made his father, teammates, family and friends, and an entire nation proud. His achievement stands as a monument to hard work, dedication, and the sacrifice required to chase dreams and compete at the highest levels. His message focuses on the underlying traits and characteristics of a champion both on and off the mats.
“The titles mean a lot to me. They represent the glory, but more importantly, they represent all the sacrifice, discipline, and hard work that nobody sees. I think that obsession has been my X-factor. Talent can take you so far, but if you’re willing to become obsessed with improving, I genuinely believe there’s no limit to what you can achieve.”
As the end of 2026 draws near, Nico’s incredible journey remains one of the season’s top storylines. The 2025 No-Gi World Champion and 2026 Gi World Champion closes this chapter of his career with a storybook ending. An Aussie star has certainly been born.
“I still feel like that sixteen-year-old kid watching the legends of the sport and thinking, I want to be one of them. Now I’m realizing that there are young competitors watching me the same way. That’s probably the most rewarding part of all of this. I’ve accomplished goals I once thought were so far away. Now I want to keep building a legacy for young Australians in the sport to look up to and show that we can achieve anything we set out to accomplish.”
